We Buy Books
When do you buy books?
We usually buy between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., but it’s always best to give us a call before you drop by.
What are you looking for?
We are a general interest store and buy all sorts of books... with a few exceptions: We don't buy romances or westerns, text books, computer manuals, hardcover mysteries, out-of-date travel guides, or books in poor condition (mildew, underlining, broken spine, etc.). Beyond that, we decide what to take on a book-by-book basis.
Please note that Dog Eared Valencia is very, very selective when buying used military history, sports, cookbooks, or children's books. The only foreign language books we buy are French and Spanish.
Is my book valuable?
It depends! We’re happy to take a look and let you know, if it’s the sort of thing we have expertise in. Here’s a link to some useful information for the novice collector.
Do you buy music, movies, or books on tape?
Nope, sorry.
Do you buy comics or used magazines?
Maybe if it's something REALLY special, but not usually.
Do you pay for books in cash or store credit?
For most books we offer store credit, also called "Trade," but for extremely desirable books we offer cash. If you're willing to take store credit for cash books, we offer 50% more. The amount we pay for books is based on their current cover price and condition. We pay competitively with other used book stores.
Will you buy books at my house?
We have a small staff and thus can do "Out Buys" only for collections with over a thousand (1,000) books, and only if the books sound especially valuable or unusual. Please call the store to inquire.
What can I do with the books you can't buy?
We have a free box outside the store so you can donate them to the neighborhood.
Will you carry the book I wrote?
Maybe. We need to see it to see if it looks like something we can sell. Your best bet is to send us an email rather than tromping all the way down here to show us a copy. Be aware, also, that we usually buy books one at a time and since we don't have a computerized inventory, it's difficult for us to tell if your book has sold. For this reason, we prefer to buy from distributors. We do make exceptions, though. If we do decide to buy your book, we'll pay you 50% of the cover price in store credit.
Anything else I should know before I bring my books?
YES!!! If you want cash for your books you MUST bring either a drivers' license, official state ID card, or passport. No exceptions, it's the law.
