Stoner, by John Williams, has become a modern classic and a house favorite here at Dog Eared. Originally published in 1965, most of us had never heard of Stoner until reprinted by NYRB Classics in 2006. It has been a word of mouth bestseller since. A true first edition hardcover of Stoner is so rare a nice copy will set you back more than $2000 bucks. This first paperback edition from Lancer, complete with the Mad Men-esque lurid cover, came out not long after the hardcover and is a true rarity. We appear to have the only copy advertised anywhere, and it can be yours for $100.
The Omar Sonnets and Lefra Lyrics by Oliver Opp Dyke: Many books find their way to the store which are quite mysterious in origin and about which very little is known. The fun part is playing detective. In this case, we learn that an Omar sonnet is an early, obscure sonnet form and were translated from ancient American tablet writings by Opp Dyke into sonnet form. This little gem was well reviewed- see the ad we found when it was released in 1909- and was printed in an edition limited to 250 copies. It features guilt lettering on the vellum spine and front, beautifully rough cut page edges and hand set printing. It does have minor scuffing and smudging to cover and interior, but is truly well preserved. This sweet example of Americana literature can be yours for $100.00.
